Camera to cloud – our key take home from IBC 2022

For those in the production industry the annual International Broadcasting Convention, known as IBC is an annual pilgrimage. A chance to get hands on with the latest tech and trends, network, and try out all of the kit that you’ve talked about buying but haven’t yet flashed the credit card at.

In this post, we outline how new tech that was demonstrated at the show is going to change the way our team collaborates from multiple locations, with a focus on camera to cloud technology.

IBC is held at Amsterdam’s RAI Conference Centre in September, all of the big manufacturers and software companies have a presence and you need at least two days to make your way around. The event bills itself as being ‘by the industry, for the industry’ and it does exactly what it says on the tin. There is so much available for every corner of the trade that you really need to plan your visit in advance to make sure you get the best out of it.

For the Cande team, our 2022 visit was about looking at innovative ways of filmmaking that can improve our client offering, trying out some specific kit with a view to some retail therapy and finding out what software developments would be available over the coming 12 months.

We made a beeline for our key suppliers Blackmagic Design, Aputure, Canon and Arri, but it was at the Adobe stand where we found our key takeaway from IBC 2022.

For every five bits of new gadgetry that sound life-changing but end up consigned to the kit shelf, there is one that comes along and genuinely promises to improve your workflow. You just know it in your gut. And know it our guts did, when we visited the Adobe stand in Hall 7 to hear about the new FrameIO Camera to Cloud workflow.

In a nutshell Adobe have, through their recently acquired video review platform FrameIO, enabled instant remote access to footage being shot on any location or set anywhere in the world, so long as there’s internet of some description. And we’re not just talking about an effective off-site director’s monitor, much sought after during the remote-working heat of the covid battle. Instead, this gives immediate access to working proxy files of your footage as soon as you have shot it.

So, we could be filming an interview in Amsterdam and by the time we’ve packed away the lights, our post-production team can be editing it in our UK HQ, working parallel. What’s more, because FrameIO is integrated into Adobe Premiere editing software, the footage will be available on the timeline in a matter of minutes.  Initial draft edits can then be shared back to us while still have boots on the ground, so we can make reflective calls on whether additional footage is needed before we leave.

This workflow has already been tried and tested by industry, with Red Digital Cinema, Teradek, Atomos and others integrating it to their hardware.

All that’s required from us is a small investment in some hardware to connect our existing Atomos Ninja to the workflow and away we go.

For us this is in principle a bit of a game-changer as we can offer our clients closer collaboration to their project progress, particularly for example our international clients. It will also enable us to offer increased turnaround times.

We’re looking forward to introducing and testing the camera to cloud workflow and have plans to do so in early 2023. Watch this space!

And if you work in the production industry and haven’t yet been to IBC, get yourself booked in for 2023 and drop us a line, we’d love to meet for a Stroopwafel.
